Sanjeevani Ayurveda – Authentic holistic experience

2015 was coming to an end and I
was in need of a soothing massage that could take away the aches from every
nerve in the body. These days, there are spas mushrooming across the city that
promise a good ambiance and aroma but the specific medicine to cure a specific ailment was
barely existing. I was well aware of the benefits of Arurveda and was eager to
try a massage at Dwarka where I reside.

Ayurveda goes back thousands of
years which deals with rejuvenation and immunity  as opposed to ophthalmology, surgery,
toxicology or even psychiatry. It is the ultimate holistic approach to
medicine.
My search ended at Sanjeevani
Ayurveda which has been running since 1996 and has been in Dwarka for more than a year in the Sector 12 market. I approached the center and found it located in a small space with an
aroma of authentic oils filling up my nostrils. There was nothing fancy about the center but the doctors at the clinic
were very informative about Ayurveda.
Dr. Swati and Dr. C.P. Verma are well experienced in this field and are very well versed with the nuances of Ayurveda. According to Dr. Swati, ” Ayurveda is based
on doshas like vata, pitta and kapha. When any of these doshas are out of
balance, they are treated naturally, using elements that have opposing
qualities.”
Here’s how doshas are categorized:

Vata Dosha is made up of the
elements ether and air. Individuals with this constitution have thin bones, dry
skin and find it hard to gain weight. When the body’s Vata goes out of balance,
a person can suffer from dry skin, worry, anxiety and fear, cold hands and feet
and painful joints.
Pitta Dosha is made up of fire
and water. People with a pitta dosha will have thick bones and skin, put on
weight easily, have a hot body temperature and are easily irritated. When this
dosha is out of balance, a person will seem angry and can suffer from high
blood pressure, loose motions and skin rashes.

Kapha Dosha is the most stable of
the three doshas and made up of water and earth. Characteristics include a
round face and eyes, heavy-set build, thick skin and bones and a loving
personality. When this dosha is off balance, a person can suffer from depression
and obesity.

Dr. Verma felt my pulse and diagnosed my condition. According to him, my spine was
very weak and needed treatment. Long hours of sitting and driving are things
that are common with the city dwellers and I was amongst them. These massages are medicinal-based
therapies individualized for every person’s dosha. Herbal-infused massage oils
are preferred because they contain blended herbs that are known to promote a
strong body and mind. I left myself at the hands of the skilled doctors who
adviced me to go for Aabhyangam + Kizhi + swedanam massage lasting for about 1
hour and 15 minutes.
Abhyangam, a 45 minute massage
lies at the foundation of Ayurvedic massage treatment. It works wonders on the
body, giving it strength, keeps your limbs firm, improves circulation and is
anti-aging. While Kizhi is a potli based massage focusing on the specific body
part healing it with infused medical herbs in a small bundle that is heated and
then applied.
Two trained therapists ushered me
to a quaint room and made me sit on a chair. She began with a warm oil head
massage. The oil made its way deeper in the root follicles and made me relax immediately.
She then massaged my head gently while applying pressure points on the head and
temple that helped me to relax further.
I was made to lie on a wooden bed
face down. The oil is not fragrant but is definitely healing and helps to relax
aching joints and muscles.
The warm oil soothed my lower
back almost instantly. Both the masseurs worked up the magic of their hands in
a circular motion that helped me to relax and fall asleep. I was transcended in
a different world. The medicinal herbs were magical and I could feel the pain
almost gone. The massage on the other parts were also gentle. The thing I loved
about the massage was the long one powerful stroke from the neck to the ankle.
The best thing was yet to come
and it was the Kizhi or potli massage. The cloth with herbs infused in it is
warmed up and pounded on the ailing parts ensuring the temperature of the oil
remains constant throughout. The sensation is hot but it’s only for the
betterment of the patient as it tends to pull out the disease from the roots
and heal it. The effect was amazing. I loved the heated oil and the small
bundle that was pounded with utmost care by the masseurs.
This was followed by
Swedanam,  a herbal steam bath where the
skin absorbs the oil profusely and makes it more supple and soft.A duration of fifteen minutes
later, I felt relaxed and rejuvenated already and thanked my therapists for the
amazing experience.
The winters are best for experiencing
Ayurveda. If you love the authentic massage without any aromatic oils, step
